For the Fruit Blend
- Combine mixed dried fruits and glacé cherries in a bowl, pour brandy or orange juice over them, and let sit overnight.
- Add chopped walnuts or pecans, tossing gently to coat.
For the Batter
- In a large bowl, beat softened butter with brown sugar until light and fluffy.
- Crack in eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
- Sift in all-purpose flour along with cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg, stirring gently.
- Stir in the drained fruit blend and chopped nuts until evenly distributed.
Baking
- Grease and line a 9×5-inch loaf pan.
- Transfer the batter to the prepared pan and bake in a preheated oven at 325°F for 60–70 minutes.
- Let the cake rest in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack and brushing with golden syrup.
